First Day Ready: How to Prepare Your Child

First Day Ready: How to Prepare Your Child

Small steps at home make the first day calm and positive. Use this checklist one week before school starts.

One Week Before

  • Set a steady sleep and wake time.
  • Practice getting dressed and packing a bag together.
  • Label all items: shoes, water bottle, lunchbox, sweater.

The Night Before

  • Pack a simple, healthy lunch and a full water bottle.
  • Lay out clothes and shoes your child can put on alone.
  • Talk about drop-off: a hug, a wave, and then walk to a teacher.

Drop-Off Tips

  • Keep good-byes short. Long good-byes make it harder.
  • Use the same goodbye phrase each day.
  • Trust the process. Tears fade when routines feel safe.

What to Pack

  • Backpack that opens easily
  • Lunch and snack (peanut policy follows school handbook)
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Change of clothes in a labeled bag
