First Day Ready: How to Prepare Your Child
Small steps at home make the first day calm and positive. Use this checklist one week before school starts.
One Week Before
- Set a steady sleep and wake time.
- Practice getting dressed and packing a bag together.
- Label all items: shoes, water bottle, lunchbox, sweater.
The Night Before
- Pack a simple, healthy lunch and a full water bottle.
- Lay out clothes and shoes your child can put on alone.
- Talk about drop-off: a hug, a wave, and then walk to a teacher.
Drop-Off Tips
- Keep good-byes short. Long good-byes make it harder.
- Use the same goodbye phrase each day.
- Trust the process. Tears fade when routines feel safe.
What to Pack
- Backpack that opens easily
- Lunch and snack (peanut policy follows school handbook)
- Refillable water bottle
- Change of clothes in a labeled bag
